Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO)...Affordable Health Insurance NationwideHMO (Health Maintenance Organization) Coverage: These are essentially prepaid health plans. In exchange for a monthly premium, the HMO provides comprehensive care for the insured, including doctors' visits, hospital stays, emergency care, surgery, lab tests, x-rays, and therapy. Care is provided either directly in its own group practice or through doctors and other health care professionals under contract. Generally, the choice of doctors and hospitals is limited to those that have agreements with the HMO. Although, exceptions can be made in emergencies or when medically necessary. There are different types of HMO models. One would be a Medicare HMO, which is an HMO that has contracted with the federal government under the Medicare+ Choice program to provide health benefits to persons eligible for Medicare that choose to enroll in the HMO, instead of receiving their benefits and care through the traditional fee for service Medicare program. One key thing that HMO's can help their respective customer base with is the prescription drug requirements for just about any medical condition. All medicines have three names: All three are exactly the same thing. One is a well established brand, the next is the generic version of that brand (it's still aspirin, nonetheless) and the last is the actual chemical. In most cases there is little difference between a brand name drug and a generic drug. In order for a generic drug to receive FDA (Federal Drug Authority) approval it must contain the same active ingredients, strength, and dosage from - pill or liquid - as the equivalent name brand drug. Generic drugs may have a different appearance then their brand name equivalent but this does not necessarily change their effectiveness. If you are concerned about the appearance or effectiveness of a particular generic drug, be sure to ask your pharmacist to explain. Certainly, since HMO's have come into the marketplace one strong contention put forth is that they drive up the cost of health care. Well, obviously, anytime a new business model, and let's get clear on this, HMO's are nothing more than profit driven business models, comes onto the scene there are inevitably going to be more costs involved. California, with it's huge population base, has amassed extremely large amounts of data relating to how well different major HMO's operate and rate in this vast marketplace.
